Hydroxycut Recall Due To Serious Liver Damage

During the news conference today, Linda Katz, interim chief medical officer of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition said the agency urges customers to discontinue use of Hydroxycut products due to serious liver damage, injury, and death that could result if using the product. Two products not affected by the recall include Hydroxycut Cleanse and Hoodia.

“Hydroxycut products contain a variety of ingredients and herbal extracts,” Katz said. The FDA has not yet determined which ingredients or doses are associated with the liver problems, according to Katz.

Hydroxycut Side Effects Include Liver Damage

Of the 23 FDA reports, serious side effects of using Hydroxycut include liver damage, elevated liver enzymes, and liver damage that might require a transplant. One 19 year old man died using Hydroxycut in 2007 says the FDA. Additional Hydroxycut side effects included cardiovascular problems, seizures, and serious muscle damage (rhabdommyolysis) that could cause kidney failure.

On their website, Hydroxycut writes: “While this is a small number of reports relative to the many millions of people who have used Hydroxycut products over the years, out of an abundance of caution and because consumer safety is our top priority, we are voluntarily recalling these Hydroxycut-branded products.”
