How do you know if you have a Yasmin Lawsuit?
Yasmin, also known as Yaz, is a top selling oral contraceptive that has found itself within the clutches of scrutiny and of lawsuits recently. As it stands, there are already a number of lawsuits against Bayer, the pharmaceutical company that manufactures Yasmin, and these lawsuits are taking place in a number of states.
What has led to these lawsuits?
Despite Yasmin’s ability to prevent pregnancy through the unique ingredients drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol, Yasmin has been associated with a number of life-threatening and serious side effects. These side effects include:
- Blood clots
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Depression and other emotional disorders
- Heart attack
- Migraines
- Liver damage
- Hypertension
- High cholesterol
- Stroke
- Pulmonary embolism
Because of advertising that did not disclose that there are more severe risks than the usual side effects that accompany birth control pills, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered the makers of Yasmin to change their marketing campaign and their marketing must be approved by the FDA before being released to the public.
Those filing lawsuits against Bayer are those who have had a loved one die from one of the above side effects, or they have been affected themselves. The women affected must show the severity of the injuries that they received while taking Yasmin to their lawyers. However, there is a decision to be made as to whether or not to file an individual lawsuit or to join a lawsuit.
An individual lawsuit is more for those who want to be heavily involved in the legal process and are willing to win more or less compensation than other women who have filed lawsuits against the pharmaceutical company. Those wishing to join a lawsuit desire to be less involved in the legal process and are fine with having compensation divided amongst them and the other plaintiffs.
If you have been harmed by Yasmin in any way, you may wish to seek out the assistance of a lawyer in order to determine if you are better suited for a lawsuit or filing a lawsuit on your own. However, it is important to keep in mind that the Yasmin lawsuits could be consolidated at any time due to a July 2009 motion filed with the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation to consolidate all 32 federal cases involving Yasmin and its side effects.
As for what the cases allege, they allege that the ingredient drospirenone works against the body’s ability to balance salt and water. This can cause the potassium level within the body to elevate and, in turn, can cause a number of health issues that include heart problems.
If the side effects you have experienced are beyond dizziness, headaches, a decreased sex drive, nausea and vomiting, and weight gain. The side effects in question are those that cause life threatening conditions or death. So evaluate your situation and seek out the help of an attorney if your symptoms are not the usual symptoms.
